Up'Chaux, Union of Lime Producers

Our Missions:

  • Defend the interests of the profession in France and in Europe, by participating in regulatory discussions and representing the sector.
  • Promote the use of air lime and magnesium by highlighting its many advantages in different industries.
  • Supporting our members in the face of French and European legislative developments, by offering them concrete and adapted solutions.
  • Encouraging good practices within the sector.

As an active member of theEULA (European Lime Association) and theILA (International Lime Association), the Union is also committed to a dynamic of international collaboration.

Lime manufacturing

Lime is produced by calcining high-purity limestone. The process begins with the extraction of limestone from quarries, where it is then crushed and heated in kilns at a temperature of around 1000°C. This treatment produces calcium oxide (CaO), commonly known as quicklime.

Transformation of quicklime

When water is added to quicklime in stoichiometric proportions, a chemical reaction occurs, forming calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2), also known as hydrated lime ou slaked lime. If water is added in excess, a suspension of hydrated lime is obtained called whitewash.

Magnesium limes are distinguished from calcium air limes by their magnesium oxide content.

Applications

The many functionalities of lime enable it to play a significant role in various applications, including steelmaking, metallurgy, glassmaking, paper, environmental protection, chemistry, civil engineering, agriculture and construction.
