For half a century, Saarstahl Ascoval is a factory located in Saint-Saulve, near Valencienne in Hauts-de-France, specializing in the production of steel.
It is part of the Saarstahl/SHS Group, a major player in the European steel industry.
Saarstahl Ascoval is a steelworks with an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), associated with continuous casting allowing the production of round, square and rectangular formats, from recycled scrap metal.
The process used by Saarstahl Ascoval allows for reduced CO2 emissions compared to a traditional blast furnace process.
Main activities :
- Production of diversified steels
- Supplying the railway industry
- Low-carbon steel: emissions of less than 2 kg of CO140 per tonne of steel produced (scope 2)
- Supply to the automotive industry
- Diverse clients
Commitment to sustainability
Quality and certification
Main activities :
- Feasibility studies of the different grades;
- Production of steels corresponding to customer specifications;
- With carbon and alloy steels up to 5% chromium;
- Proven capabilities in low carbon and high cleanliness steels
Production of diversified steels:
Wide range of steels in different formats and grades,
Product formats include:
- Rectangular and square blooms,
- Billets in the form of round bars.
- Round: Ø180, 220, 250, 260, 270, 280, 310, 325 mm
- Blooms: 255mm x 330mm, 300mm x 365mm
- Banknotes: 155mm x 155mm, 180mm x 180mm
- Lengths: from 4,5 to 12,4 mm
- Quality: different grades of steel (contact us)
Supplying the railway industry:
Around 85 % of Ascoval's production is destined for the Saarstahl Rail rolling mill in Hayange, where the steel is used to manufacture railway rails.
Low CO2 steel:
Saarstahl Ascoval plays an important role in the transition to more environmentally friendly steel production. Thanks to its Electric Arc Furnace steelmaking process, the plant produces steel with a level of CO2 emissions that is significantly lower than traditional methods.
Supply to the automotive industry:
Around 10 % of Saarstahl Ascoval's activity is intended for the automotive sector.
With IATF certification 16949, Saarstahl ASCOVAL supplies blooms and square formats to subcontractors of automobile manufacturers.
Diversified clients:
Around 5% of its production is intended for third-party customers, particularly in the forging, circular rolling for wind turbines, and general mechanics and tubes sectors.

- Bearing steels
Commitment to sustainability
One of the most notable aspects of Saarstahl Ascoval is its commitment to reducing CO2 emissions. Using an electric arc fusion process, the plant has managed to lower its carbon footprint, with emissions below 140 kg of CO2 per tonne of steel produced (scope 1)This commitment is part of the SHS/Saarstahl Group's broader strategy to promote sustainable industrial practices to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045.
