25.99Z Permanent Magnet Recycling; Sustainable Magnet Manufacturing

A metallurgical start-up for permanent magnets based on rare earths, MagREEsource is a spin-off of the CNRS in Grenoble born in 2020, which aims to recreate an industrial sector of permanent magnets for European industry. From a low-impact end-of-life magnet recycling technology, we recreate new magnets and magnetic solutions for industry.

  • Technological innovation, industrial sovereignty and the circular economy are the pillars of the company.
  • Magnets are the heart of electric motors and electromagnetic applications used for our energy transition and the decarbonization of our industry.

MagREEsource is a manufacturer of rare earth magnets that aims to become a sovereign and sustainable alternative through its vertical integration, from recycling to the manufacture of new magnets.

MagREEsource recovers end-of-life magnets from WEEE recycling channels (scooters, electric motors), ELVs (end-of-life vehicles) or from the dismantling of old wind farms, to use them as new material and remanufacture new magnets for its industrial customers.

In June 2024, MagREEsource, a pioneer in the recycling of permanent magnets, inaugurated its first production site in Noyarey, in the Grenoble metropolitan area. The company, recognized for its technological innovation and environmental commitment, has won several national and European calls for projectsIt is also the second company in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes to benefit from the European Just Transition Fund for its “MagWind” project.

MagREEsource stands out for its ability to manufacture permanent magnets from magnet waste, using patented recycling technologies. These magnets, fully recycled, have similar properties to the original magnets and are environmentally friendly. This technology reduces CO2 emissions by more than 90 % and strengthens the industrial sovereignty of the European Union, which depends on 98 % of rare earth imports from China. The company is thus aligned with the European Union's strategy to diversify supply chains and prioritize circular technologies. MagREEsource operates in various sectors such as mobility, medical, electronics, industry and defense. From here 2030, the mobility and wind sectors, particularly offshore, should represent 50 % of its market.

Since its inception, MagREEsource has grown rapidly from a small team of researchers to over 30 employees. By continuing its circular model, the company plans to create the first European permanent magnet factory by 2027 with his project “MagFactory”. In 2030, this factory should reach a production of 1kt, create approximately 200 jobs and help reduce CO2 emissions 60kt per year.
