To be the driving force behind the energy transition in Alsace

An Alsatian energy company, sustainably committed to the region, ÉS acts through all of its activities to enable access to energy and develop low-carbon solutions, by balancing human well-being and the limited resources of our planet.

Pioneers of high-temperature geothermal energy in Alsace, we have been operating two power plants in Soultz-sous-Forêts and Rittershoffen since 2016 and aim to be a major player in the lithium sector. The Alsatian subsoil has natural predispositions for the development of renewable heat and electricity production thanks to geothermal energy, by capturing hot water present in natural reservoirs of the Rhine valley (170°C at a depth of 2500 m, in Rittershoffen).

Together, we are building a low-carbon future for Alsace

• We base our development on tangible results, experienced teams, serious studies and realistic and objective performance simulations in order to carry out our projects responsibly

• We aim to develop geothermal projects in the region and to be a key player in the development of the lithium industrial sector in Alsace and the Grand Est, in partnership with Eramet. This partnership provides the region and its residents with low-carbon energy and lithium in a short circuit.

The geothermal water present in the subsoil of northern Alsace is rich in lithium, approximately 180 mg/L. Tests carried out on the power stations of Soultz-Sous-Forêts and Rittershoffen have demonstrated that it is possible to extract it and thus combine the production of renewable energy and the production of low-carbon lithium of battery quality, on the same site.

In January 2023, ÉS and Eramet, a global mining player specializing in metals for the energy transition, signed an exclusive memorandum of understanding for the launch of the Alsace Géothermie Lithium (Ageli) project. This project aims to industrialize a process for extracting and refining lithium from Alsatian geothermal waters.

Ageli thus aims to develop one of the most responsible lithium production projects in the world.

The project also aims to contribute to the sovereignty and reindustrialization of France and Europe on critical metals, and to the production of decarbonized energy by geothermal energy.

By 2030, the objective is to produce at least 10000 tonnes of lithium carbonate from geothermal energy per year. This represents approximately 10 % has 15 % of the French automotive industry's estimated needs for 2030. What to make 250000 batteries for electric vehicles each year.

En 2024, the installation of a pilot unit at the Rittershoffen power plant should allow the project to continue with the launch of a detailed study. The final investment decision should be made during 2026.
